3 Books Every College Student Should Read

Reading is not as popular is it used to be, and because of that we are missing out on a lot of good information that we would normally get. That’s not to say that reading books is the ONLY worthwhile way to get your information, but it certainly is better than a steady diet of Facebook and Twitter! I know I sound like an old person for saying that, but it’s true! Here are a few useful books that you should read when you get the time. They’re not difficult, and they certainly stand the test of time and are still useful today!

How To Win Friends and Influence People – Dale Carnegie

This is one of the best psychology-disguised-as-self-help books you will ever read. It offers you a glimpse into the heads of other people, to figure out what motivates them and makes them tick.

For example, Carnegie talks about how people never judge themselves very harshly and always see themselves as better than they actually are; therefore, criticism will only awaken a bias AGAINST you and not convince them of anything.

You will rarely influence anyone by trying to shame someone into better behavior. You have to motivate through positive reinforcement.  This book is a great place to start, because it’s easy to read and gives you information you can use in job interviews and just getting to know people!

Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill

This book not only talks about how to get rich; it is more of a general mindset book. The premise is that everything you want comes from aligning all your mental processes to set yourself up for success. For example, if you want to get really good at playing the saxophone you have to visualize yourself doing it, then take steps to get better!

You have to combine thought with action! Hill interview a variety of brilliant men for this book, such as Thomas Edison, Andrew Carnegie, and other powerful and rich men who were able to get money through his process. You may not be after money, but changes are there is SOMETHING you want. And this book can probably help you get it!

Any Book of Poetry

Poetry is a very underrated art form today. The type of poetry that you will end up liking largely depends on what kind of person you are, but my theory is that everyone enjoys poetry to some degree.

They just may not know it yet! If you are a fan of horror films, give Edgar Allan Poe’s poems a try! If you are more of a romantic, try William Blake! I know all kinds of people that love poetry, from the saxophonists in the music department that play saxes from Wind Plays all the way to my friends in the Engineering department, who are studying to be Civil Engineers!

People from all walks of life like poetry (and reading in general!) so give it a shot! You might end up liking it!
