College is a great time in your life to pick up hobbies that can entertain you for the rest of your life. Many college students devote most of their free time on weekends to drinking and playing lots of video games and eating lots of junk food.
While those things are a lot of fun as long as you don’t get hurt, why not try to find some hobbies that set you apart from the crowd? Why not try something new? I want to talk about a few hobbies that I have tried myself that are better (and healthier!) alternatives to too much drinking and video games.
Train For a Race
I’ll admit: this one isn’t for everyone. Not everyone wants to put in the time that it takes to train. But you’d be surprised how many people are able to run much further and faster than they thought. I ran my first half marathon (13.1 miles!) when I was 12 years old.
You can do it too! You just have to set aside some time. The Iron Man competition, a triathlon, or a marathon or half marathon are all great races to train for. Just give yourself about 4 months to work up to the distance, and you’re good to go!
Learn a Musical Instrument
College is a great time to pick up a musical instrument. There are never any lack of musicians at any school, and most people will teach you at least some basic lessons for a few dollars per lesson.
If you don’t want to pay anything, there are plenty of YouTube videos that can teach you lessons for almost any instrument.
Guitar and piano are by far the most instruments to teach online, but you can learn anything from lute to tuba! All you need is access to the internet. It’s easy to search Amazon for a cheap guitar or Digital Piano Judge to get a good price on a keyboard.
I used to do a lot of reading as a kid, but during my Freshman year of college I all but stopped reading. In the past year I’ve started reading again, and now I spend most of my money at the bookstore. You should at least pay a visit to the bookstore every once in a while; it’s well worth your time!
I have yet to meet anyone who went to Barnes & Noble and couldn’t find a single book they like. Anyone can find a book they like, and once you start it’s hard to stop! Try just reading for entertainment for a week; no TV and no video games. You may not even want to go back to normal entertainment!
These are just a few of the great hobbies you can do in college. I hope you’ll start reading, or order a keyboard from https://digitalpianojudge.com/digital-piano-brands/, or get out and run. There are so many other ways to entertain yourself… Don’t do the same things as everyone else!
